CLOSE/CAPTION is an experimental documentary inspired by Hito Steyerl’s essay International Disco Latin and Sasha Kohan’s essay “No Legibility for Some, Illegibility for All”: Subtiltes, Captions, and the Pursuit of a Comprehensive World. These essays speak to the absurdity of “standard English” as well as the art of translation and subtitling. CLOSE/CAPTION is a how-to on cake making by Eliza Mozer, a professional baker, interspliced (and perhaps undercut) by an onlooker’s curious commentary. The perspectives, accents, and dialects contrast each other and create a space for reflection on the power of language, particularly the hegemony of English, inside of a playful space.
